Summary of the 2023 THSAA Artesian Classic Golf Tournament
Twenty golf teams registered to participate in the tenth annual THSAA Golf Tournament (Artesian Golf Classic) at Capitol City Golf Club on June 3 2023. The tournament is THSAA’s major fundraiser to support the
scholarship program as well as other alumni activities. Tournament goal remains to one day host a full 36 team tournament and we are over half way there! This year’s “best ball” tournament was again won by Team Bell
consisting of Matt Bell, Todd Franklin, Dave Glenn, and Cory Shephard with a score of 55; closely behind by one stroke was Team Wisner consisting of Josh Taylor, Jeremy Taylor, Danny Meyer, and Dan Kunitz. Two other
teams scored a 58, Team Loren Grunenfelder and Team Keith Bausch. Player’s names from Team Bell will be engraved on the tournament trophy kept on display at THS. The Men’s “Longest Drive Contests” was won by
Brian Scheibner of Team Alexis Alverson. “Closest to Pin” was won by David Potwin of Team Dan Lowe. The Women’s “Longest Drive” was won by Deb Olson of Team Patti Banze and “Closest to Pin” was won by Tracy
Coffee of Team Banze. Winners received Costco gift cards.

Net proceeds from this tournament along with donations from several very generous alumni donors will allow THSAA to award six $1500 scholarships to graduating seniors which will be announced at THS commencement on
the 7th of June 2023.

The Women’s Longest Drive and Closest to Pin was won by Lee Toler Hagen of Team Hagen. Winners received Costco gift cards.

Tournament goal remains to one day host a full 36 team tournament so we can improve the quality and quantity of scholarships awarded to graduating seniors of Tumwater High School. This year’s “best ball” tournament was won by Team Beagle with a score of 15 under par. Team Beagle consisted of Andrew Beagle, Parker Mercer, Dylan Chirstoffer and Carson Hughes. Player’s names from Team Beagle will be engraved on the tournament trophy kept on display at THS. The Men’s “Longest Drive Contests” was won by Carson Hughes and “Closest to Pin” was won by Dylan Chirstoffer. The Women’s Longest Drive was won by Shea Hopfauf of Team Hirota, and the “Closest to Pin” was won by Diane Shimizu of Team Hirota. Winners received Costco gift cards. The tournament was concluded by a delicious burger-fest prepared by the Fire Creek Grill and Ale House.

The tournament is THSAA’s major fund raiser to support the scholarship program as well as other alumni activities. Tournament participation was up from last year and our continued intent is to one day host a full 36 team tournament so we can improve the quality and quantity of scholarships awarded to graduating seniors of Tumwater High School. This year’s “best ball” tournament was won by Team Hoyne with a score of 14 under par. Team Hoyne consisted of Roger Hoyne, Nathan Stand and Chris Calvert. Player’s names from Team Hoyne will be engraved on the tournament trophy kept on display at THS. The Men’s “Longest Drive Contests” was won by Chris Calvert of Team Hoyne and “Closest to Pin” was won by Roger Hoyne of Team Hoyne. The Women’s Longest Drive was won by Lisa Hirota of Team Hirota, and the “Closest to Pin” was won by Donna Colvin of Team Kristen VanLoo. Winners received Costco gift cards. The tournament is THSAA’s major fund raiser to support the scholarship program as well as other alumni activities. Tournament participation was up from last year and our intent is to one day host a full 36-team tournament so we can improve on the quality and quantity of scholarships awarded to graduating seniors.
This year’s “best ball” tournament was won by 2014 champion Team Olympia Federal Savings consisting of team members Chad Yerrington, Jason Graves, Greg Lathrop, and Manith Manikhoth
with a score of 64 (8 under par). In hot pursuit just a stroke or two behind were teams Groat and Campbell. Player’s names from Team Olympia Federal will be engraved on the tournament trophy kept on display at THS. The Men’s “Longest Drive Contest” was won by Manith Manikhoth of Team Olympia Federal and “Closest to Pin” was won by Brad Hargrave of Team Loren VanLoo. The tournament is THSAA’s major fund raiser to support the scholarship program as well as other alumni activities. Tournament participation was up from last year and our intent is to one day host a full 36 team tournament.
This year’s “best ball” tournament was won by 2015 repeat champion Team Groat consisting of team members Randal Groat, Mike Groat, Tim Lookabaugh, and Brent Grabinski with a score of 64 (8 under par). In hot pursuit just a stroke or two behind were Team Olympia Federal Savings, Team Lakeside Industries, and Team THS Basketball Coaches. Player’s names from Team Groat will be engraved on the tournament trophy kept on display at THS. The “Longest Drive Contests” was won by Nick Smith of Team Lakeside Industries and “Closest to Pin” was won by Gary Leucknotte (class of 68) (12 feet) of Team Madison.

As a post script, it was noted that we had no female golf participants for the first time in the history of our tournament. We need to correct this and make sure we create interest for female golfers to participate.

Twenty-four enthusiastic golfers teed off at 12:45 am June 20, 2015 to participate in the third annual (fourth if you’re counting the 2011 50th THS celebration tournament) THSAA Golf Tournament at Tumwater Valley Golf Course. The tournament is THSAA’s major fund raiser to support the scholarship program as well as other alumni activities. Tournament participation was down from previous years due to the US Open being held at Chambers Bay on the same weekend; however, we all had fun and raised enough funds to continue our scholarship program for next year.
This year’s “best ball” tournament was won by the team consisting of team members Randal Groat, Mike Groat, Daryl Horne, and Brent Grabinski with a score of 11 under par. Their names will be engraved on the tournament trophy kept on display at THS. The longest drive contests were won by (male) Gary Lueckenotte (68) and (female) Gayle Adam Smith (65). The Closest to Pin was won by Norm Smith (Gayle’s husband and owner of N R Smith and Associates, CPA). Winners received Costco gift cards. The tournament was concluded by a delicious buffet dinner/award ceremony served by the River’s Edge Restaurant at TVGC.

This year’s “best ball” tournament was won by the team of Ron Gudyka, Phil Hallstrom, Eric Tonder, and Kevin Campbell (87) with a score of 8 under par. Longest drive winners were Kevin Campbell and Andrea Carey (90). Closest to pin winners were Lloyd Ensley (65) and Andrea Carey. The first three lowest scoring teams, plus longest drive and closest to pin winners received Costco gift cards for their excellent performance. The tournament was concluded by a delicious buffet luncheon/award ceremony served by the River’s Edge Restaurant at TVGC.
